The DS110 is a digital servo drive produced by Kollmorgen as part of the DSA SERCOS Drives series. Designed for cabinet mounting, the unit receives motion commands over the real-time SERCOS interface and delivers regulated three-phase power to synchronous or induction servomotors used on packaging, conveying, and pick-and-place equipment. Its primary role in automation is to translate high-level velocity or position setpoints into the precise current and voltage required at the motor terminals, completing the feedback loop between the machine controller and the mechanical load.

The DC bus inside the DS110 is stabilized by a capacitance of 1170 µF; this energy storage limits voltage ripple during dynamic load changes. When excess regenerative energy arises, the bus can absorb up to 41 J within the specified 325–420 VDC window before the shunt circuit engages. For continuous operation, the power stage supplies a phase current of 5 A, yielding a sustained output of 0.6 kW when supplied from 120 VAC lines or 1.0 kW on 240 VAC mains. A shunt transistor turns on at 425 VDC to divert additional energy into an internal resistor. Closed-loop speed regulation is aided by a velocity loop bandwidth of 400 Hz, allowing the drive to correct speed errors with sub-millisecond response while maintaining commanded trajectory accuracy.

The protective resistor is rated for an internal continuous dissipation of 50 W, so low-level regenerative power can be handled without external hardware. During rapid deceleration events, the same circuit tolerates momentary peaks of 4.5 kW, preventing DC link overvoltage until the load energy is exhausted. For brief acceleration demands, the current limit rises to 10 A, doubling the continuous rating and enabling short bursts of mechanical torque. This allows the DS110 to absorb returned energy during deceleration and support short torque bursts during acceleration.
