The DIGIFAS 7204-CAN servo amplifier is produced by Kollmorgen as part of the DIGIFAS 7000 Servo Amplifiers series. Intended for machine tools, packaging cells, and robotic axes, the module converts energy from a regulated DC bus into phase-controlled output that drives permanent-magnet servomotors. Motion commands, status words, and diagnostic traffic are exchanged through the built-in CAN bus interface, which is accessible through a 9-pin Sub-D socket. With a compact steel housing measuring 275 × 71 × 235 mm and a mass of 2.1 kg, the unit fits into crowded control cabinets without requiring special structural support.
At its continuous rating, the amplifier delivers 4.2 A RMS of phase current, a value suited for medium-frame servomotors with an inductance of at least 8 mH. During acceleration or rapid position correction, the drive can supply a peak current of 8.4 A RMS for short intervals, allowing extra torque without causing a thermal overload. The DC link operates at 560 VDC, and the pulse-width-modulated output switches at 8.33 kHz. This combination limits audible motor noise while keeping switching losses moderate. The current regulators operate with a bandwidth of 1 kHz, so commanded torque tracks reference changes within one millisecond. A residual voltage drop of 5 V across the power stage ensures that most of the bus voltage reaches the motor terminals.
An overvoltage threshold of 750 V disconnects the IGBT bridge from the bus to protect downstream wiring. When the motor regenerates, excess energy is dissipated through an internal ballast resistor rated for 75 W of continuous power, preventing the DC-link voltage from rising above the trip point. Under nominal operating conditions, the unit dissipates 60 W of heat, while idle power consumption is limited to 15 W to reduce heat inside the cabinet. The mains supply must be able to furnish a connected load of 2.5 kVA. This value supports proper fuse sizing and cable selection for the upstream converter.
