The B8962NP is a dual-axis brushless servo smart drive produced by Kollmorgen in the B8000 Brushless Servo Smart Drives series. It delivers closed-loop control to paired servo motors for packaging, material handling, and general automation tasks. Incoming commands are translated into phase currents that make the connected motors follow the requested torque and speed profiles.

With 2 independent axes, the B8962NP reduces cabinet space by integrating dual power stages in one housing. Commands reach the drive through a RS-232C link that follows a 9600-baud, 8-N-1 serial format, giving straightforward host PC connectivity. Each axis can deliver a continuous phase current of 5 A while sourcing up to 10 A for short-term accelerations, and these ratings set the allowable motor torque and the selection of associated power cables. A bank of eight programmable inputs and eight programmable outputs lets the controller exchange limit, home, or fault signals with the machine's PLC. Up to 99 drives can be daisy-chained on the same serial bus, so multi-axis systems may be expanded without extra communication hardware.

Thermal protection and power-handling limits are built into the drive. A heat-sink sensor issues a shutdown at 55 °C, preventing semiconductor overstress during high-duty cycles. The supply section accepts single-phase utility lines, drawing 2300 VA when operated on 115 VAC and 4600 VA on 230 VAC. Minimum opto-isolator drive is achieved with a 12 mA logic threshold, while individual digital outputs can source 100 mA to energize relays or indicator lamps. For feedback loops, the drive furnishes an encoder rail of +5 VDC and limits the feed current to 200 mA so sensor loads remain within regulator capacity. Without a front panel, setup is handled through the serial interface, which reduces exposed controls on the cabinet door.
