The B8962-30K is a brushless servo smart drive from Kollmorgen and is part of the B8000 Brushless Servo Smart Drives series. The unit integrates power electronics, axis coordination, and application logic for motion tasks that require compact two-axis control. It provides an embedded environment so that stepper or servo motors can be driven without external PLCs, making it suitable for packaging lines, small gantries, or labeling stations where coordinated speed, position, and simple I/O handling are necessary.

Across its dual axes, the drive can deliver a continuous motor phase current of 5 A while sustaining momentary demands up to 10 A, allowing rapid acceleration without saturation. Each channel is backed by a bus that draws 2300 VA from a 115 VAC supply or 4600 VA when wired for 230 VAC, allowing proper circuit protection to be selected. The controller supports 2 synchronized axes and accepts differential quadrature TTL feedback. Its encoder port supplies 5 VDC at 200 mA to power the sensing electronics. For host communication, an RS-232 link using the 9600, 8, N, 1 format can daisy-chain up to 99 units. Eight programmable inputs and eight outputs let each axis react to sensors or drive relays directly.

Application code is stored internally, and the motion processor can hold 400 programs with a combined size of 30K user bytes, eliminating the need for external data cartridges. Thermal management relies on a heatsink sensor that commands shutdown at 55 °C, and the drive will fault if the attached motor housing climbs to 135 °C. By enforcing these limits, the controller protects its gate drivers and helps prevent demagnetization during prolonged duty cycles. The remaining memory space also supports parameter sets for each axis, allowing quick job changes without host intervention.
