The B8962 belongs to the B8000 Brushless Servo Smart Drives series from Kollmorgen. This compact unit combines power conversion, motion control, and I/O processing to coordinate brushless servomotors in automated assembly cells, lab automation, and packaging machinery. By embedding position loops and power stages in a single enclosure, the drive reduces cabinet space while delivering the deterministic torque and speed commands required for repeatable industrial motion. Integration with upstream controllers is accomplished through an onboard RS-232 serial port for parameter loading and diagnostic queries.

The drive manages 2 axes and sustains a continuous motor current of 5 A on each channel so that machines can maintain production torque without thermal cutback. For rapid indexing or load surges, the current can rise to 10 A momentarily, and that level is controlled by the current loop. When powered from 115 VAC mains, the converter draws 2300 VA, and this figure increases to 4600 VA with a 230 VAC source; the single-phase input rectifier automatically adapts, eliminating line-selector switches. These ratings allow the device to energize mid-frame brushless motors without oversizing the upstream branch circuit.

Control and feedback resources are separated from the power section by 4000 V of opto-isolation, protecting the differential quadrature incremental encoder input. The encoder port supplies 5 VDC at up to 200 mA, accommodating line-driver encoders, while a bank of 8 optically isolated inputs accepts prox-sensor signals for position latching or fault resets. The internal heat sink trips at 55 °C to protect the drive from overheating, and configuration parameters are transferred over the RS-232C interface at 9600 baud.
