Product Description:
The 38.F5.A1P-90-H axis drive module is produced by KEB and supplied within the F5 Combivert Axis Drives series. It regulates three-phase induction or synchronous motors in large-scale industrial automation lines. By converting fixed network power into an output with variable frequency and amplitude, the drive enables closed-loop speed and torque control for high-power machinery such as extruders, rolling mills, and test stands.
The standard control board samples line conditions and controls the IGBT bridge mounted on a water-cooled heat sink. The input section accepts a three-phase supply of 400 VAC, at which the rectifier draws a rated current of 1523 A. The inverter can sustain a continuous output phase current of 1450 A, supporting motors up to 800 kW through two 150 mm² conductors per phase. Power loss is limited to 13.4 kW, and the integrated coolant channels remove the resulting heat to maintain appropriate semiconductor junction temperatures. Fast switching is supported by a voltage rise rate of 8 kV/µs, allowing carrier frequencies up to the rated 2 kHz while keeping the rate of voltage change within insulation limits. The drive can operate with a shielded motor cable up to 100 m long without excessive voltage reflections. The inverter also modulates down to 3 Hz to provide torque at low operating speeds.
For transient loads, the inverter delivers a peak phase current of 1813 A for several seconds before thermal rollback occurs. Hardware protection activates an overcurrent trip at 2175 A to prevent damage to the power stage. The integrated braking transistor diverts surplus energy to an external resistor. With a maximum regenerative current of 380 A, the resistor value must not fall below 2.2 Ω to limit current and heat dissipation. When an application requires a higher dynamic response, the carrier frequency can be increased to a maximum of 4 kHz, although the resulting additional switching loss must be considered. The water-cooled assembly removes this heat and helps keep semiconductor temperatures within safe operating limits at the higher switching frequency.
