The 17.BR.110-6303 braking resistor produced by KEB for the BR Braking Resistors series absorbs excess regenerative energy from variable-frequency drives and brings a motor to a controlled stop. By converting surplus electrical power into heat through its fixed resistance network, the unit protects the drive’s DC link and maintains safe deceleration profiles in automation lines such as conveyors or hoists.
At the electrical core, the resistor presents 30 Ω of resistance, establishing the current that flows when it is connected to the drive’s DC bus. Under continuous duty it can dissipate 1200 W, so heat sinks and airflow must be sized to evacuate that load during every production cycle. Short bursts are handled at a peak of 19 kW, enabling rapid braking after emergency stops without saturating the element. The thermal safeguard is a normally closed temperature switch that opens at 160 °C; once the element cools, it automatically resets to restore continuity. Environmental ingress protection is rated at IP20, meaning fingers are shielded from live parts but the unit must be mounted inside a cabinet.
System timing is defined by an on-time of 6 s within a reference cycle of 120 s, giving the resistor a 5 % duty ratio that prevents thermal saturation during repetitive deceleration events.
