In a drive system, it converts surplus electrical energy from the DC link into heat, allowing frequency inverters on 400 V or 480 V mains to decelerate motors without overvoltage trips. The component is installed close to a converter as a dedicated energy-dissipation element in industrial automation lines. This arrangement helps control regenerative energy during rapid stopping, reversing, or downward-motion loads.
The resistor has a resistance of 42 Ω, which limits current flow at a given DC link level. It has a continuous dissipation rating of 100 W, which is the amount of heat the housing can release indefinitely when air flows freely around the fins. For heavy braking events, the unit tolerates a peak load of 14 kW, so short energy spikes are absorbed without reaching the thermal limit. These peaks are permissible as long as the cyclic duration factor remains at 2%, which keeps average heating within the continuous rating.
