The VLT 3522 variable-speed drive is produced by Danfoss within the VLT 3000 Variable Speed Drives series. It is an AC inverter that modulates three-phase input power so plant controllers can regulate induction motor torque and speed for conveyors, pumps, and other industrial loads. The unit interfaces with 50 or 60 Hz mains power, provides a stable DC link to its output stage, and incorporates electronic safeguards that help minimize downtime in automated processing lines.
The drive has a DC bus discharge interval of 14 minutes; after isolation, its internal capacitors reach a safe potential within this period before the terminals are accessed. During operation, the drive achieves an efficiency of 96% at full load, converting most of the incoming energy into usable motor power. Start commands are limited to two starts per minute to protect contactors and fuses. The output transistor logic permits unlimited output switching sequences, supporting processes that require frequent control transitions. Motor leads may extend up to 1,000 ft with unshielded cable, allowing the inverter cabinet to be installed at a considerable distance from the driven machine.
The input section accepts three-phase mains power with a tolerance of ±10% and operates with line frequencies of 50 or 60 Hz. The output can generate fundamental motor frequencies of up to 50, 60, 87, or 100 Hz for overspeed or multipole applications. Power factor correction maintains a power factor of 0.9 to 1.0 under nominal load, limiting reactive demand on upstream electrical equipment. Integrated electronic motor protection monitors stator temperature through a thermistor connected in accordance with the DIN 44081 standard. The inverter also responds to grounding and short-circuit faults to reduce the risk of damage to the drive and connected motor. Its enclosure and internal components can withstand vibration of up to 0.7 g during transportation and operation.
