The VLT 3508 is a variable frequency drive built by Danfoss for the VLT 3000 Variable Speed Drives series. The unit accepts three-phase mains power and generates a controlled output waveform so that industrial controllers can regulate motor speed in conveyors, fans, or material-handling equipment. By varying the output frequency rather than relying on mechanical throttling, the drive helps reduce energy consumption while maintaining precise motion profiles. Its power electronics provide adjustable voltage and frequency to support controlled acceleration, deceleration, and continuous operation across a range of industrial applications.
The VLT 3508 is wired for a three-phase supply, and the power section accepts three input phases. It tolerates line fluctuations of ±10%, allowing installation on standard 380–480 V industrial networks without derating. Under full load, the conversion stage reaches an efficiency of 0.96, so only modest heat sinks are needed inside the panel. For fieldbus integration, the control card has a default node address of 01 and communicates at 9600 bps, matching many PLC serial ports. The drive can be mounted up to 1000 ft from the motor when shielded cable of the appropriate gauge is used. An electronic circuit monitored by a DIN 44081 thermistor disconnects the output if the stator temperature rises beyond safe limits.
The control section permits no more than two line-side starts per minute to minimize inrush stress, but it imposes no limit on inverter gating cycles. The drive supports unlimited output switching, so rapid speed commands do not shorten its service life. After mains power is removed, the capacitors require a 14-minute power-off wait time before enclosure access because residual charge may remain. The drive withstands vibration up to 0.7 g, enabling cabinet mounting on equipment frames subject to continuous oscillation. Additional safeguards include automatic restart lockout after fault trips and thermal protection that detects overload through both heat sink temperature monitoring and motor-embedded sensors.
