The VLT 3042 is a variable frequency drive produced by Danfoss as part of the VLT 3000 Variable Speed Drives series. The device converts fixed-frequency three-phase mains power into a variable-frequency and variable-voltage output that aligns motor speed with process demand. Used in conveyors, mixers, and fan systems, it removes the need for mechanical dampers or gear changes and integrates with standard automation controls through its terminal strip and available fieldbus options. Its adjustable output allows connected motors to operate at speeds suited to changing production requirements without modifying the mechanical drive train.
In continuous-torque duty, the drive can support 30.0 kW of motor output, while variable-torque applications such as centrifugal pumps can use up to 37.0 kW. Its digitally synthesized output spans 0 to 120 Hz or 0 to 500 Hz, allowing both constant-torque and high-speed applications without encoder feedback. The output voltage is adjustable from 0 to 100% of the mains voltage, so the same unit can soft-start motors on lightly loaded lines or supply full voltage for rated torque. Acceleration and deceleration are programmable through a 0.1 to 3600-second ramp, enabling gentle starts for fragile machinery or brisk indexing in production cells. These parameters are stored in nonvolatile memory and can be copied through the detachable keypad, allowing consistent settings to be transferred between compatible units.
Motor adaptability is assisted by a selectable base frequency of 50, 60, 87, or 100 Hz, accommodating four-pole and six-pole motors configured for different supply systems. The inverter can be mounted up to 300 m from the motor because its built-in dV/dt filtering and tracking algorithms help maintain suitable output characteristics over long cable runs. The drive supports unlimited output switching, allowing the control system to issue frequent start, stop, or reversing commands as required by the application. Overtemperature protection is provided by electronic monitoring with a DIN 44081 thermistor input, which monitors the heat sink and motor sensors. This protection initiates a controlled shutdown when excessive temperature is detected, helping prevent thermal damage to the drive or connected motor.
