The VLT 3022 is a variable-speed drive assembled by Danfoss for the VLT 3000 Variable Speed Drives series. It converts fixed-frequency, three-phase mains power into a modulated waveform that lets process controllers adjust induction motor speed and torque without mechanical throttling. By managing motor flux electronically, the unit improves energy use and reduces wear in conveyors, pumps, and fan systems commonly found in industrial automation.
Under rated load, the drive provides an electrical efficiency of 0.96 at 100% load, meaning nearly all supplied power reaches the motor terminals. Output frequency can be programmed within a range of 0–120 Hz or 0–500 Hz, supporting both standard and high-speed applications. Voltage on the output bridge tracks the mains across 0–100% of mains voltage, allowing soft motor magnetization during startup. A displacement power factor of 0.9/1.0 keeps line current closely aligned with voltage, minimizing reactive demand on the supply transformer. Acceleration and deceleration profiles are controlled by a ramp generator with a setting range of 0.1–3600 seconds, allowing motor torque to be matched to mechanical inertia without causing overcurrent trips.
Two continuous-duty ratings indicate the available shaft power: constant-torque operation delivers 15.0 kW, while variable-torque operation reaches 22.0 kW for centrifugal loads. The terminal block accepts a tightening torque of 31 lb-in, securing the supply and motor conductors in applications where vibration can reach 0.7 g. Electronic thermal protection uses a DIN 44081 thermistor to disconnect the inverter if the internal temperature rises above a safe limit. Ground-fault-resistant and short-circuit-resistant output stages support repeated switching events and tolerate up to two starts per minute without derating. The control can synchronize with 50 or 60 Hz mains power, and its programmable motor table supports base frequencies of 50, 60, 87, or 100 Hz for compatibility with a broad range of IEC and NEMA motors.
