Internal Product Review

The VLT 3016 is a Danfoss variable speed drive with 11.0 kW constant-torque shaft output and 15.0 kW variable-torque shaft output. Low operating noise of 61 dBA on 380-500 V applications and a 73.6 A current limit on the 200 V set make the drive a strong choice for controlled motor performance.

Product Description:

The VLT 3016 is an AC variable-speed drive manufactured by Danfoss as part of the VLT 3000 Variable Speed Drives series. It converts fixed-frequency mains power into a modulated output that lets automation systems vary induction motor speed, so pumps, fans, and material-handling equipment operate only as fast as their processes demand. By delivering closed-loop voltage-and-frequency control rather than mechanical throttling, the drive improves energy efficiency and reduces wear while remaining compatible with three-phase power systems.

With a 200–230 V supply, the drive delivers a continuous output current of 46.0 A, which corresponds to a shaft power rating of 11.0 kW for constant-torque duty. The current limit is set to 73.6 A, allowing short overloads without tripping while protecting the semiconductor stage. Output voltage is capped at 230 V, and motor excitation follows a fundamental frequency of 50 Hz. A start voltage of 19.4 V provides breakaway torque at low speed, while a magnetizing current of 14.4 A adjusts the voltage-to-frequency curve for standard NEMA B motors. A DC-injection braking voltage of 10 V provides rapid stopping when required.

On higher mains ranges, the unit supplies 24.0 A on 380–415 V lines and 21.7 A on 440–500 V lines, raising mechanical output to 15.0 kW in variable-torque applications. Cable terminals accept conductors up to 35.0 mm2 on the lower-voltage frame and 16.0 mm2 on the higher-voltage frames, simplifying integration with plant wiring. Acoustic emission stays within 63 dBA for an IP20 or IP21 enclosure on the lower-voltage model and drops to 61 dBA on the higher-voltage models. A top and bottom clearance of 200 mm must be maintained around the heat sink fins to keep cooling airflow unobstructed.
