The VLT 3011 is an AC variable frequency drive manufactured by Danfoss for the VLT 3000 Variable Speed Drives series. It converts fixed-frequency, three-phase mains power into a pulse-width modulated output that allows factory controllers to adjust induction motor speed and torque without mechanical throttling. In automated conveyors, pumps, and fan systems, it stabilizes process variables by regulating motor flux in response to control commands. This electronic speed control can reduce unnecessary motor operation when an application does not require full output.
The drive can supply a constant-torque load of up to 7.5 kW and a variable-torque load of up to 11.0 kW, allowing the same unit to operate positive-displacement machines or centrifugal equipment. Electrical losses are limited because its efficiency reaches 0.96 under nominal operating conditions. Speed reference resolution is maintained at ±0.05%, providing fine adjustment of the commanded motor frequency. Open-loop accuracy is ±0.01%, which helps keep the output frequency closely aligned with its setpoint. A closed-loop PID regulator provides an accuracy of ±0.1% for pressure or flow control, while slip calculation maintains output within ±0.5% of the rated synchronous speed. The output supports unlimited switching by external contactors, allowing the motor to be isolated without damaging the inverter.
In constant-torque service, the unit tolerates ambient temperatures up to 45 °C, while the maximum temperature for variable-torque operation is 40 °C. Power terminals accept conductors as large as 16.0 mm², accommodating panels that use heavy-gauge wiring for motor and supply connections. The inverter section is protected against ground faults and short circuits, preventing downstream electrical faults from damaging the power stage or propagating toward the supply. Mechanical resilience was verified through a vibration test at 0.7 g, supporting operation where normal machinery vibration reaches the enclosure. A thermistor input that follows the DIN 44081 standard monitors motor temperature and allows the drive to respond before thermal overload damages the connected motor. Ground-fault detection, short-circuit monitoring, and motor temperature supervision operate alongside the drive’s normal speed and torque regulation functions.
