The VLT 3008 is a variable-speed drive manufactured by Danfoss for the VLT 3000 Variable Speed Drives series. Mounted in a control cabinet, it supplies adjustable three-phase power to induction motors, allowing operators to adjust speed, torque, and direction directly from the keypad or through a fieldbus interface. By replacing across-the-line starters, the drive limits inrush current, softens mechanical engagement, and maintains constant process flow in automated material-handling, HVAC, and general industrial equipment.
Incoming mains voltage can vary by ±10%, and the power section still maintains rated performance, so voltage dips or surges within that range do not trip the drive. It accepts a 3-phase supply and delivers a continuous motor shaft output of 5.5 kW under constant-torque conditions. At full load, the conversion efficiency reaches 0.96, reducing heat generation and cabinet ventilation requirements. The inverter section produces output frequencies up to 500 Hz, supporting high-speed spindles and above-base-speed applications while maintaining a sinusoidal voltage waveform. Electronic and thermistor-based thermal protection shuts down the drive before the winding temperature exceeds the DIN 44081 threshold. Ground-fault and short-circuit protection helps protect the drive and downstream equipment from electrical faults.
Speed control extends down to 0 Hz, enabling standstill torque when the motor is held by vector control. Motor leads can run up to 300 m with unshielded cable or 150 m with shielded cable, providing layout flexibility in large plants. Acceleration and deceleration are programmable, with ramp times ranging from 0.1 seconds for rapid indexing to 3600 seconds for slow starts that minimize hydraulic shock. The power section supports unlimited output switching, allowing the motor circuit to be switched without a specified cycle limit. A vibration test level of 0.7 g indicates that the electronics can tolerate typical machine-frame resonance during operation.
