The VLT 3003 is an AC variable-speed drive manufactured by Danfoss for the VLT 3000 Variable Speed Drives series. It converts fixed-frequency, three-phase mains power into a regulated output that allows control systems to adjust motor speed in conveyors, pumps, and similar industrial equipment. The unit occupies a footprint that is 284 mm wide and 178 mm deep, allowing it to fit within compact control cabinets. Its IP00 version weighs 7.4 kg and is intended for installation inside a suitable protective enclosure. These dimensions make the drive practical for retrofits where the available panel space is limited.
In continuous-torque mode, the drive supplies 7.8 A at 230 V, 4.1 A at 380/415 V, and 3.4 A when connected to 440/500 V lines. This mode provides a nominal apparent power of 3.1 kVA on 230 V systems and supports a shaft output of 1.5 kW after conversion losses. Electrical protection is provided by a recommended 16 A prefuse, which helps protect the input circuit against excessive current. Internal conduction and switching losses total 100 W under continuous-torque loading, so the cabinet must provide adequate heat dissipation around the drive. Operating efficiency reaches 0.96, allowing most of the input energy to be transferred to the connected motor rather than released as heat. The current, power, and loss values support the selection of upstream protection, conductor sizes, and cabinet ventilation for constant-torque loads.
In variable-torque service, the inverter can supply 2.9 kVA, while its power loss remains 100 W under the associated load curve. This operating mode is suitable for loads such as fans and pumps, where torque demand generally decreases as motor speed falls. The drive can be installed in locations that expose its frame to vibration levels of up to 0.7 g. Its control electronics permit a maximum mains switching rate of 2/min, so the input contactor should not be cycled more than twice per minute. Frequent starting and stopping should instead be managed through the drive controls when the application permits, reducing unnecessary operation of the mains contactor. Gradual speed adjustments can be commanded through the regulated inverter output without repeatedly disconnecting and reconnecting the incoming supply.
