The HZ172A607 is a mechanical preset counter produced by Danaher within the Timers and Controllers series. It registers discrete step inputs, advances an internal cam, and switches relay contacts when the user-set value is reached, allowing batch control or machine indexing in automated processes. A panel-mounted dial provides direct preset selection, and the built-in clutch mechanism synchronizes the cam with the count register.
The device accepts a 120 VAC, 50/60 Hz mains feed for its drive motor and control circuits. Its counting window runs from a minimum of 1 count to a maximum of 40 counts, and it tracks pulses at a maximum rate of 500 counts/min without loss. A dial lock prevents inadvertent knob movement during operation. When the preset is reached, two instantaneous SPDT relays and two delayed SPDT relays change state. Each contact set carries up to 10 A at 120 VAC, so the counter can directly drive solenoids, motor starters, or indicator lamps. The delayed path closes one count after the instantaneous path, providing the one-count differential required for staged sequencing.
The electromechanical section requires a step-input on-time of 40 ms and at least 80 ms of off-time between pulses to guarantee full indexing. At each transition, the step motor draws 26 VA of inrush power and settles to a 10.5 VA holding level through the clutch coil. The coil reaches pull-in within 50 ms. Initial energization of the clutch draws a peak of 16 VA, after which holding power falls to 10.5 VA. If the preset is changed or a cycle must restart, the counter resets within 500 ms at the highest setting and returns all relays to their home positions. During reset, the delayed contacts return to their home positions one step before the instantaneous contacts, maintaining the one-count differential during repetitive operation.
