The HZ172A6 is a panel-mount counting controller produced by Danaher within the Timers and Controllers series. Designed for use in industrial automation lines, the device advances an internal stepping mechanism each time it receives a properly shaped pulse and actuates an output relay when the preset total is reached. By converting repetitive machine strokes, conveyor indexes, or piece counts into a reliable electrical contact, the counter helps synchronize downstream processes, initiate batch changes, or trigger operator alerts without additional logic hardware.
The controller operates from a nominal supply of 120 VAC at 50/60 Hz, allowing it to share power with compatible control transformers. Its output relay is rated for 10 A at 120 VAC, so it can switch solenoids, small motors, or pilot circuits directly. Counting performance reaches 500 counts per minute, a speed sufficient for typical packaging or press applications, while the mechanical register can accumulate up to 40 counts before resetting. To manage coil energy, the clutch draws 16 VA at pull-in and then 10.5 VA while holding, engaging fully within 50 ms. Step timing uses a 40 ms on-pulse and an 80 ms off-pulse to ensure clean transitions and avoid overtravel by the stepping mechanism. This timing provides a controlled advance before the next input pulse is accepted.
The minimum setpoint is 1 count, enabling single-stroke operations. The controller operates at ambient temperatures ranging from 0 °F to 140 °F, allowing use in unheated shops and high-temperature enclosures. Count registration remains 100% accurate because movement is strictly mechanical, and the 500 ms reset interval allows the mechanism to clear fully before the next production cycle. Each advance draws 26 VA of inrush power through the stepping motor, after which the circuit reverts to the lower clutch holding demand. This reduction limits continuous power dissipation and heat buildup in compact control panels.
