Product Description:
The 5ML051 is a coil kit designed by Danaher for energizing DC contactors. It is compatible with Joslyn Clark 5DP5 and 5DP8 series contactors. This coil provides consistent magnetic force for safe circuit switching in systems rated up to 535 A at 500 VDC and it allows contactors to be operated from a 120 VAC control source.
The 5ML051 coil includes a continuous-duty electromagnetic coil, rectifier and a resistor. Its rectifier assembly converts AC input to DC coil current and its series configuration of resistor reduces steady-state current after pull-in. The coil’s inrush power ranges from 1650 VA to 2200 VA at rated voltage and its sealed holding power is approx. 320 VA under normal conditions. Its construction uses high-grade insulation and encapsulated windings. This 5ML051 coil is housed in a molded arc-resistant thermoplastic frame and it is rated for continuous operation under industrial duty cycles. Its assembly mounts internally into the contactor’s coil cavity and it does not require external mounting brackets for installation. The unit interfaces with the free-floating armature of the contactor and its mechanical operation closes or opens power poles when coil is energized. It actuates both NO/NC power contacts and the NC poles enable integration of dynamic braking resistors. The 5ML051 coil’s operating temperature range is specified from -30°C to +40°C and it is moisture resistant for up to 95% RH, non-condensing.
The 5ML051 coil is built to withstand vibrations from heavy electromechanical loads and its average weight is 2 lbs. Its electrical terminals accept factory-specified lead wires or lugs and it supports integration with SCR-based DC drive systems. The 5ML051 coil does not come with any onboard timing functions and its control timing is handled by external PLC or logic relays. Its operating voltage rating is 110 to 120 V AC at 50/60 Hz frequency.
Frequently Asked Questions about 5ML051:
Q: Why is a rectifier included in the 5ML051 coil kit?
A: The rectifier in the 5ML051 converts incoming AC control voltage into DC to energize the contactor coil. This ensures consistent magnetic field generation and reduced coil noise.
Q: What is the function of the resistor in the 5ML051 coil circuit?
A: The series resistor limits steady-state current after initial inrush. This protects the coil from overheating during long duty cycles.
Q: How does the molded thermoplastic housing improve coil performance?
A: The arc-resistant housing of the 5ML051 resists electrical tracking and mechanical wear. It also adds safety during high-current operations in enclosed panels.
Q: How does the 5ML051 integrate with SCR-based DC drives?
A: The 5ML051 provides reliable DC coil energization, which syncs well with the output stages of SCR-controlled rectifiers. This ensures smooth contactor switching under variable load conditions.
Q: What is the role of dynamic braking resistor integration in the 5ML051?
A: The NC contacts actuated by the coil allow dynamic braking circuits to be inserted. This is vital in rapid deceleration of motors in crane or hoist systems.
