The 231HC is a high-current linear amplifier manufactured by Copley Controls for the CC High Power Amplifiers series. It conditions power from a regulated DC bus and feeds precise analog waveforms to proportional valves, magnetic bearings, and voice-coil stages in automated machinery. By accepting current or voltage commands from motion controllers, the module functions as an intermediary between low-level control electronics and electromechanical loads, delivering tightly regulated energy while maintaining channel isolation and straightforward thermal management.
The amplifier may be ordered in a single- or multi-channel configuration, enabling one enclosure to drive several loads when space is limited. Internal power devices are kept within their thermal limits by an air-cooled heat sink, so no external liquid cooling circuit is required. Under steady operating conditions, the module delivers 70 A DC/RMS, while the control loops permit short excursions up to 130 A. The output stage tolerates bus voltages as high as 150 V, expanding compatibility with high-inductance electromagnets. Current or voltage can be selected as the operating mode, and custom tuning parameters can be loaded through the front-panel interface to match the load impedance. Master/slave and parallel operation are supported for applications that require coordinated output stages. Dedicated comparators provide automatic overcurrent protection when the configured threshold is exceeded.
Dynamic operation is supported by the amplifier’s pulse and peak current ratings. For a 100 µs square-wave demand followed by a 100 µs rest period, the amplifier can supply 85 A. Longer bursts with 500 µs on and 500 µs off are limited to 75 A to control the temperature rise in the power devices. Sinusoidal surges can reach a crest current of 98 A, supporting loads that require brief increases in magnetic force. A triangular reference waveform can be driven up to 120 A without clipping, allowing the output current to rise and fall linearly during rapid command changes. The available waveform ratings accommodate different magnetic load responses while keeping operation within the amplifier’s current limits.
