The APM-090-14 is a compact servo drive module produced by Copley Controls for the Accelnet CanOPEN Modules series. Designed to mount close to a brushless or brushed motor, the unit converts a DC bus supply into controlled phase currents and exchanges motion commands over the CANopen fieldbus. In industrial automation it serves as the interface between a machine controller and the motor, providing torque, velocity, or position regulation while minimizing panel space and wiring.
Electrically, the module operates from a DC bus that can range from 14 VDC to 90 VDC, allowing direct connection to low- or high-energy supplies used in mobile or stationary equipment. The internal auxiliary rail can furnish up to 500 mA, enough to power encoders or sensors tied to the drive connector. During continuous motion the amplifier can deliver 7 A rms to the motor windings, while short overloads are supported at 14 A for 1 s to accommodate acceleration profiles. Motor inductance must not fall below 200 μH so current rise stays within the servo loop’s stability limits. Both the current loop and the PWM bridge switch at 16 kHz, giving rapid current regulation and low audible noise.
On the control side the CANopen interface transmits PDOs at up to 1 Mbit/s, synchronizing motion with the velocity and position loop that updates every 4 kHz. Incremental encoders are accepted through a quadrature input rated for 5 MHz, and step-and-direction sources can be fed at 4 MHz for open-loop indexing. High-resolution feedback is available through sin/cos interpolation that yields 12 bits/cycle, reducing following error in micro-positioning tasks. These signal capabilities are packaged in a 76.3 x 58.2 x 20.5 mm housing that weighs only 0.12 kg, easing placement on moving axes or inside compact control enclosures.
