Internal Product Review

The ACM-055-18 is a Copley Controls Accelnet CanOPEN module with 55 Vdc maximum bus voltage and 6 Adc continuous current. Peak capability reaches 18 Adc, and 2.5 kHz current loop bandwidth supports crisp motor response in demanding motion applications. A 15 kHz current loop update gives ACM-055-18 a very refined control profile, making the unit a strong choice for compact servo systems.

Product Description:

The ACM-055-18 is a digital servo drive module produced by Copley Controls as part of the Accelnet CANopen Modules series. Designed for panel-mounted installations, it interfaces with motion controllers over the CANopen fieldbus. It regulates current, velocity, or position in brushless and brushed servomotors used throughout industrial automation.

The DC bus must not exceed 55 Vdc, which is the highest supply level the power stage can accept without overstress. At that supply level, the amplifier can deliver a continuous motor current of 6 Adc, corresponding to a continuous output power of 0.33 kW. Regulation quality is supported by a current-loop bandwidth of 2.5 kHz, allowing the drive to track rapid changes in commanded torque. The current-control loop runs at 15 kHz, giving the controller multiple computation cycles within each mechanical time constant. Analog command ports present 5 kΩ of input impedance, helping protect connected PLC outputs. Ten optically isolated digital inputs and two sourcing outputs support limit switches, homing routines, and drive-ready signaling. The PWM carrier operates at 15 kHz, while its ripple frequency reaches 30 kHz to keep audible noise low. The step-and-direction interface accepts pulses at rates up to 2 MHz for indexing applications.

For dynamic moves, the drive supplies a peak current of 18 Adc for up to 1 s, permitting rapid acceleration of low-inertia loads. Under this short-term rating, the output stage can momentarily reach 0.99 kW, enabling brief actuator bursts above the continuous output level. Encoder feedback is accepted at rates up to 2 Mline/sec, allowing high-resolution quadrature devices to operate at elevated speeds while maintaining position integrity. A 3 kHz position and velocity update rate synchronizes motion with fieldbus commands. The available transient output supports start-stop cycles, electronic gearing, and fast point-to-point moves in pick-and-place, semiconductor, and packaging machinery.
