The SM50-100LN is an AC inverter produced by Bosch Rexroth Indramat for the SM AC Inverters series. The unit converts fixed-frequency mains power into variable-frequency output power that drives synchronous or induction machines in positioning, conveying, and process equipment. By modulating voltage and frequency, it allows precise control of motor speed and torque, making it a central component within closed-loop industrial automation systems.
It supplies a continuous output of 50 A, which is the sustainable motor phase current under rated thermal conditions. Internal power is drawn from a DC link charged to 460 V, giving the drive the voltage headroom needed for high-speed operation. Speed feedback can be matched to the controller because the inverter accepts a tachometer signal scaled at 2.7 V per 1,000 rpm. The unit can also linearize a commanded current output with a full-scale value of 8 V. Closed-loop control remains stable across a 1:10,000 regulation range, allowing extremely slow movement as well as operation at full rated speed. Short load surges are handled with a 100 A peak current that may be delivered for two seconds before automatic limiting. The open construction has an IP00 protection rating, so the inverter must be installed inside a switchgear cabinet. A ready-status relay rated for 1 A at 24 VDC indicates the drive’s operating status. The electronics draw only 30 W from the auxiliary supply during standby.
Thermal management is supported by an external blower supplied with 24 VDC and drawing 100 mA. The design limits total conversion losses to 350 W when the inverter operates at full output. The control board accepts analog speed or torque commands from sources with an impedance of at least 10 kΩ, minimizing the load placed on PLC analog outputs. An internal ±15 VDC rail supplies power to the encoder feedback circuit. Encoder signals may be routed through cables up to 100 m long without additional signal conditioning, simplifying long cable runs between the inverter and motor in large machines.
