The SM 5/10 TCI is an AC inverter manufactured by Bosch Rexroth Indramat within the SM AC Inverters series. Designed for closed-loop motor speed regulation, the unit converts fixed mains energy into a variable frequency and voltage output suited to induction or synchronous machines used in automated machinery and material-handling lines. It provides the link between the plant controller and the power stage, accepting analog reference signals and feeding conditioned current feedback so that drive controllers can execute precise torque commands.

Its internal control electronics draw a stabilized 24 V DC supply, isolating logic functions from the high-energy bus. The analog command path is scaled for a maximum of 10 V, so a full reference from the PLC corresponds to the inverter’s rated output. Current feedback is likewise normalized to 8 V, enabling symmetrical monitoring of motor phase current against the programmed thresholds. Mechanical connection to the DC link is secured by busbar screws tightened to 3.7 Nm, preventing resistive losses under load cycling. The brake chopper branch is protected by a snubber network that uses a capacitance of 0.22 µF to absorb switching transients.

Signal integrity across distributed cabinets is preserved by keeping the DC link wiring within 3 m and routing it through a ferrite core sized 28 × 20 mm to suppress common-mode noise. Auxiliary devices powered from the inverter can be fed by the integrated DC/DC stage rated at 24 V/10 A, removing the need for an external converter. Operating status is shown on a 7-segment display that presents numeric fault codes on the front panel. For long machine layouts, the unit supports motor leads up to 25 m, while encoder feedback can be extended 10 m without degradation. A dry relay forms the ready contact so the controller can interlock upstream safety circuits once the inverter has completed self-diagnostics.
