Product Description:
The SM 3.5/8-G16 belongs to the SM AC Inverters series manufactured by Bosch Rexroth Indramat. As a single-slot rack module, it serves as the power stage that converts a fixed DC link into a variable-frequency, variable-voltage output for closed-loop speed control of asynchronous motors used in conveying, packaging, and general motion tasks. The single rack slot format simplifies wiring when multiple inverters share the same DC bus.
This inverter chops the DC bus at a carrier or clock frequency of 10 kHz, a switching rate selected to minimize audible noise while keeping semiconductor losses within limits. Under natural convection it can deliver a continuous output of 3.5 A. Adding the optional axial fan raises the sustained current capability to 6 A for applications that demand higher torque at low speeds. A laminated DC link rated at 325 V DC feeds the IGBT bridge, providing the energy needed for acceleration and regeneration. For short overloads of up to five seconds, the current may rise to 8 A, allowing the drive to overcome inertial or frictional peaks without triggering protective shutdown. The design limits conduction and switching losses to keep thermal loading compatible with cabinet ventilation.
Total dissipation during nominal operation is 13 W, so heat sinks can be sized conservatively even in tightly packed control racks. The housing carries an IP 20 enclosure rating, indicating finger-safe openings but no sealing against dust ingress, which suits installation inside electrical enclosures classified for climate class 3K3. Overall module mass is 2.4 kg, which keeps handling manageable during installation. Reliable operation is specified from 0 °C up to +55 °C, with storage permissible between –25 °C and +70 °C. The electronics are qualified for mounting elevations to 1000 m without derating.
