The SMpdp is a Profibus-DP communication module manufactured by Bosch Rexroth Indramat for integration into the SB System Box Units series. Installed in a single electronic bay of the system box, the module allows box-level I/O assemblies to exchange cyclic data with PLCs that supervise motion or process cells. By acting as the Profibus device interface, it converts the internal parallel signals of the SB backplane into serial fieldbus telegrams. This conversion allows the unit to serve as a remotely addressed node within distributed industrial automation networks.

Within the backplane, the board occupies 1 card slot, so it can be added without displacing other function cards. The module operates as a slave device, meaning all process data transfers are initiated by an external master rather than by the SB unit itself. The electrical interface complies with the RS-485 physical layer used for Profibus DP. Up to 64 bytes of combined input and output data can be exchanged per device address, permitting compact yet complete cyclic telegrams. When the downstream Se3x2 or Seh3x2 extension layers are present, the module can expose as many as 32 I/O points. Telegram length for those extension layers is limited to 4 bytes, which simplifies data mapping in controller projects.

For smaller Ke300 or Ke310 subassemblies, the module supports a minimum configuration of 16 I/O points with a telegram size of only 2 bytes, conserving network bandwidth on lines that share many slave devices. The module weighs 0.15 kg, which allows it to be installed without additional support fixtures. Its compact format fits the available electronic bay while preserving access to neighboring function cards. The selectable I/O capacity allows the communication board to support multiple SB System Box arrangements without assigning unnecessary telegram space. Predictable telegram lengths also help the controller schedule cyclic transfers across a network containing several addressed devices.
