The SMeth is a communication add-on developed by Bosch Rexroth Indramat for the SB System Box Units series. Installed on the system backplane, the board equips a controller rack with an Ethernet gateway and file-transfer capability, allowing parameter files and diagnostic logs to move between a System Box and supervisory computers without removing storage media. Inside an automated cell, the module functions as a bridge between motion controllers and higher-level networks, enabling remote maintenance and centralized recipe management while preserving the rack’s existing architecture.
Network communication is provided through an Ethernet port that follows the 10BASE-T wiring standard, allowing the board to connect to existing Category 3 or Category 5 cabling. Data frames travel through the TCP/IP protocol stack, providing standard network addressing within plant subnets and permitting common network tools to reach the controller. File exchange uses the FTP application-layer service for transferring supported files between connected systems. The channel operates in an asynchronous mode, so control and data packets are transferred as soon as they are queued instead of waiting for a timed communication cycle. These standard network services allow the System Box to operate as a host on a local area network and support established routing, firewall, and monitoring practices.
For local retention of transferred files, the module relies on the SMpcc storage device, allowing process reports to remain available when the network uplink is interrupted. The board weighs only 0.1 kg, so it adds little mass to the enclosure and avoids placing a significant additional load on the system backplane. Compatibility extends to System Box controller types KE300, KE310, and KE312, allowing the communication board to operate with several controller generations. Its electrical and mechanical parameters match the requirements of the SB System Box Units backplane, so the module can be installed without changes to the existing rack wiring.
