The RD52.1-4B-160-R-VW-FW drive controller from Bosch Rexroth Indramat is part of the RD 500 Drive Controllers series and manages motor power in industrial automation. It converts fixed-frequency mains energy into a regulated variable output that controls speed, torque, and braking on connected AC machines. By combining control, protection, and power electronics in one unit, it supports conveyors, extruders, winders, and other continuous-duty loads. It also interfaces with higher-level PLCs so machine sequences and process changes can be coordinated from a central control system.

It employs field oriented vector control, so torque-producing and flux-producing current components are processed separately for better low-speed response and stable regulation under changing load. The inverter frame is sized for a continuous output of 160 kW, which suits medium-to-large induction or synchronous motors used in demanding production lines. The three-phase input operates within a 380 to 480 V range, allowing connection to common 400 V and 460 V utility systems. As a converter 3 × AC device, it rectifies incoming mains power before generating a modulated output, and the permissible input fluctuation remains within ±10 % to limit the effect of normal line variation.

On controllers above 132 kW, liquid cooling is used, and in this model an internal pump circulates coolant through plated channels, so liquid cooling with an internal pump removes heat without relying on heavy cabinet airflow. A built-in brake chopper routes regenerated energy to an external resistor during rapid deceleration and helps prevent DC-bus overvoltage. Harmonic mitigation on the line side is handled by an integrated mains filter, which reduces conducted emissions on the supply connection. The unit uses the combination V1 + W1 function code for its control configuration.
