Bosch Rexroth Indramat manufactures the RD52.1-4B-160-R-FM-FW, a member of the RD 500 Drive Controllers series. The device is a drive controller intended for cabinet installation where it interfaces with upstream rectifiers and downstream motor leads. Within an automation cell, it converts fixed mains power to variable output so that connected three-phase AC machines accelerate, decelerate, and hold speed according to programmable profiles used in conveyors, presses, and material-handling stations. This arrangement allows the controller to manage motor behavior across changing loads and process speeds in industrial equipment. It belongs to the first design generation of the platform and serves as a controllable power stage between PLC motion commands and industrial motors.

Its output stage is sized for 160 kW, giving it headroom for large-frame pumps and extruders that draw high continuous power. The input section accepts line voltages from 380 to 480 V, and a tolerance of ±10% allows stable operation under typical plant voltage swings. Closed-loop regulation is achieved with field-oriented vector control, so current is resolved into torque-producing and magnetizing components for fast dynamic response. This control method improves torque response at low speed and during load changes. A factory-installed built-in brake chopper diverts regenerated energy to braking resistors and helps prevent DC-link overvoltage during rapid deceleration or vertical load holding.

Thermal management is provided by liquid cooling with an internal pump for 132 kW and higher, eliminating large external fans and keeping semiconductor junction temperatures stable when the unit is mounted in sealed enclosures. The liquid circuit supports high-power operation without relying on large cabinet-mounted fans. Harmonic mitigation begins at the input because an integrated mains filter attenuates conducted emissions before they reach the plant supply, and it also helps reduce interference on shared plant power lines. On the output side, the design uses no output chokes, which reduces cabinet space while the vector algorithm helps limit dV/dt. The incoming source must be a three-phase AC converter supply, and this arrangement supports the controller's Function 1 feature that feeds back U6, V6, and W6 phase currents to the control board for real-time monitoring.
