The RD42.1-4R-053-L is a modular drive controller built by Bosch Rexroth Indramat for the RD 500 Drive Controllers series. It converts fixed-frequency mains power into a variable output that can be adjusted by a PLC or motion card, so motors in conveyor sections, hoists, or process pumps receive the torque and speed required by the application. By combining measurement, regulation, and protective functions in one housing, the unit reduces the number of separate components that must be installed in the automation panel. This integrated layout helps simplify cabinet organization and keeps control, monitoring, and protection functions in the same module.

The controller is supplied as a three-phase AC converter stage that accepts three-phase line power. Its input window spans 380 to 480 V, allowing installation on common industrial distribution networks and marine switchboards. A line variation of up to ±10% can be tolerated without derating, so moderate voltage dips or overvoltage conditions within this band do not interrupt operation. Internal heat is removed by forced air cooling, and the guided airflow helps keep the power semiconductors within their permitted temperature range. An integrated mains filter is built in to reduce conducted emissions and to avoid the need for separate filtering hardware.

The power section operates without a brake chopper and with recovery, so excess kinetic energy is returned to the supply instead of being dissipated in a resistor. The unit is design generation 1, placing it in the first RD hardware release. Classified as a drive controller, it provides current, voltage, and fault feedback for supervisory diagnostics while maintaining stable control behavior. It can report operating conditions directly to higher-level control or diagnostic software during routine machine operation.
