Product Description:
The RAC 3.5-150-460-D0I-W1-220 is an AC main spindle drive controller built by Bosch Rexroth Indramat within the RAC Spindle Drive Controllers series. It regulates torque and speed for spindle motors in machine tools and automated machining centers by converting three-phase mains power into controlled inverter output. By processing digital command values, the unit supports acceleration, braking, and steady-speed operation during cutting processes. In typical spindle applications, it can support drilling, milling, or turning processes that require fast speed changes and stable running at the commanded value.
The drive accepts a mains supply of 3 x AC 400 V, 50 Hz, ±15% or 3 x AC 460 V and can deliver up to 150 A of motor current for demanding spindle loads. Logic and gate circuits use a separate AC 230 V / 50-60 Hz control feed, which keeps the low-level electronics separate from the power stage. This arrangement separates control power from the main supply and helps keep command electronics stable during switching. Field wiring terminates on the X4 25-pole connector, while velocity commands arrive as a 16-bit parallel digital word that the controller converts into output frequency. The parallel command interface suits systems that exchange speed references with low latency. Internal heat is removed by a built-in fan, so the unit can be mounted in a cabinet without external cooling ducts. The design does not include additional bleeder resistance or a secondary encoder input, which keeps the interface arrangement simpler.
The controller provides an incremental encoder output, allowing a CNC system to read spindle position directly from the drive. That output can also support position-related spindle functions when the higher-level control needs direct feedback from the drive. The unit is Series 3 and Version 5. Those codes indicate the product generation for this model. It does not include an external bleeder resistor, so regenerative energy must be handled within the connected system. Without a second encoder channel, the controller is intended for layouts that do not require additional feedback at the drive.
