Bosch Rexroth Indramat builds the RAC 3.5-150-460-A0D-W1-220 as an AC main spindle drive controller in the RAC Spindle Drive Controllers series. The unit regulates motor torque and speed for high-power machine tool spindles, allowing closed-loop machining operations that demand precise rotational control. Integrated power electronics and command inputs place the controller between a CNC system and a three-phase induction or synchronous spindle motor, where it supports stable speed changes and repeatable cutting performance. This arrangement helps maintain spindle stability during drilling, milling, and turning cycles where load can change rapidly.
The power section accepts a mains supply of 3 × AC 400 V / 50 Hz ±15 % or 3 × AC 460 V, allowing the same drive to operate on European or North American plant voltages without tap changes. Control electronics are energized separately at AC 230 V / 50–60 Hz, which helps isolate logic circuits from disturbances on the main power bus. This separation also supports orderly control startup before full spindle power is applied. A continuous output capability of 150 A enables the controller to energize large spindle motors during heavy cutting passes. Thermal energy is removed by a built-in fan, so the module can be used in enclosed cabinets with limited external airflow. Spindle velocity is commanded with an analog (±10 V) signal, giving the CNC fine resolution over the full speed range.
Axis feedback and diagnostic data are exchanged over a 16-bit parallel digital position setpoint interface, which transmits target values without conversion delay. The parallel command path is suited to control systems that exchange position words directly. Hardware wiring to the control rack is concentrated on connector X4, 9 poles, which helps keep cabinet connections organized. The drive is delivered without an additional bleeder and without an additional encoder input, so extra braking or secondary feedback hardware is only needed when the application requires it.
