By linking the spindle to the wider motion system, it converts low-level velocity references from a CNC or PLC into the high current required for rapid acceleration and accurate speed holding. This allows the spindle axis to respond quickly during speed changes while maintaining stable operation under varying cutting loads.
The controller operates from a three-phase supply of 3 x AC 400 V at line frequencies between 50 and 60 Hz and can deliver a continuous output of 250 A to the spindle motor. An internal thermal path based on an internal air blower moves air through the housing, allowing the electronics to dissipate switching and conduction losses without external cooling hardware. Speed references arrive as a differential analog signal of analog (+/- 10 V), providing the drive with proportional control over spindle speed. This differential input helps the controller respond to signed speed commands from the higher-level control. Field wiring lands on the X4 terminal block with 9 poles, which groups motor phases, protective earth, and sensor lines for straightforward cabinet integration.
Energy generated during rapid deceleration is handled by the built-in braking resistor, which is supplied with an additional bleeder to help prevent DC bus overvoltage and reduce cycle times. Position feedback options remain fixed because the unit is shipped without an additional encoder input, so applications that need only the standard spindle encoder can connect directly, while systems that require dual encoders need external signal conditioning. This arrangement suits spindle applications that use the standard feedback path and do not require a second encoder channel inside the drive. The drive is Series 2 and Version 2.
