Operators can adapt the unit to application requirements through installation of plug in modules and through installation of the appropriate firmware version. The CSH01.1C-SE-ENS-EN1-NNN-L2-S-NN-FW is equipped with several factory-installed modules. The master communication interface is SERCOS, which is a digital communication interface used for communication between industrial automation devices. It is a high-speed, communication protocol that was first developed in the 1990s by a consortium of German automation companies. SERCOS uses a ring topology where all devices are connected in a closed loop, and communication is passed from one device to the next.

This allows for fast communication between devices, with typical data transfer rates of up to 16 Mbps. The safety module installed on the CSH01.1C-SE-ENS-EN1-NNN-L2-S-NN-FW supports safe torque off (STO), which is a safety function that is used to prevent a motor from generating torque in a machine or process.
