Installed on the control desk or enclosure door, the unit forwards discrete signals to the controller so an operator can start, stop, jog, or halt axes without reaching into the cabinet. Its purpose in industrial automation is to provide a reliable human-machine interface that shortens wiring runs and keeps safety circuitry local to the user.

At the core of the panel, there are 16 digital inputs for push-button, selector, or sensor contacts and 16 digital outputs for pilot lamps or interlock solenoids; this one-to-one mapping simplifies PLC address planning.
