Product Description:
The M-1610 is a parallel digital-output module produced by Beckhoff within the M Parallel IO Modules series. It converts controller telegrams arriving over a fiber-optic I/O link into 24 V switching signals, so field solenoids, relays, and lamps can be driven directly. This arrangement places the switching function near the machine frame and reduces the need for long control-cabinet wiring runs. Its role is suited to distributed automation layouts where output points must be placed close to valves or indicator devices. The device fits on DIN EN 50022/50035 rail and acts as a distributed actuator node that off-loads central PLC backplanes when fast, isolated outputs are required.
An output voltage of 24 VDC is available at each terminal, and the module offers 16 channels organized as 2 x 8-bit ports to simplify byte-level addressing. Data exchange over the glass fibers reaches 2.5 MBaud, while the internal logic updates process data at 25 µs per 32 bit, which helps keep response times below typical motion-control cycle times. Four alarm LEDs report short circuits or wire breaks, and the electronics separate the outputs into four isolated groups so a fault on one section does not propagate to the others. Integrated short-circuit protection disconnects an overloaded channel, and the watchdog timer halts all outputs if fresh bus data is not received within the allowed window.
The electronics draw only 0.1 A from the 24 VDC supply, which has a tolerance of ±10%, yet each channel can source up to 2 A to the load. Because the channels are current-capable, the module can energize common industrial loads without requiring interposing output cards in the cabinet. Cabinet space is conserved because the housing measures 270 x 76 x 68 mm. A Toshiba TOCP155 connector mates the optical cable without tools, and mounting on the DIN rail requires no additional brackets. If the controller fails to refresh the outputs within 100 ms, the internal watchdog switches every channel off. That shutdown behavior prevents stale output states from remaining active after a communication interruption.
