The KL8601-0000 is a communication interface module released by Beckhoff within the KL Analog Input Modules series. Designed for mounting inside TeSys U motor starter assemblies, the unit bridges the starter cluster to the overall I/O architecture of a Beckhoff Bus Terminal station. In an automation cell, the module presents status data from each starter and delivers discrete control signals back to field devices, reducing panel wiring and allowing parameter access through the PLC. By combining power circuitry and low-level control in a single plug-in slice, it supports modular expansion across conveyor, pump, and material-handling lines.
In operation, the module communicates through the Beckhoff Bus Terminal system, so it shares the same 5 V backplane signaling and address mapping used by analog, digital, and safety terminals. Field wiring is terminated on a shielded RJ45 jack, which helps protect the differential data pair from electromagnetic noise generated by contactors and motor leads. Two discrete outputs rated at 2 × 24 V DC are available to energize starter coils or auxiliary relays; each path can supply up to 0.5 A continuously, which is sufficient for the TeSys U control solenoid. On the internal system side, the slice draws only 20 mA of base current from the terminal bus, leaving capacity for additional analog, encoder, or communication cards in the same rack without overloading the power feed.
When the module is coupled to a starter chain, the first serial link from the KL8601-0000 to the initial TeSys U base can extend up to 5 m, giving flexibility in placing the terminal row away from the motor starter assembly. Each subsequent jumper between individual starters is limited to 0.5 m, a short span that helps preserve signal integrity between devices. A single interface can supervise up to 8 starters, accommodating grouped motor feeders such as ventilation fans or parallel pumps on one branch circuit. Compatibility includes TeSys U standard, expanded, and multi-functional control units, so the same slice can handle protection, measurement, or communication tiers without additional fieldbus adapters. The dedicated mounting pocket inside the TeSys U frame secures the module while maintaining clearance for heat dissipation and tool-free removal.
