The KL6021-0010 is a serial communication terminal produced by Beckhoff for the KL Analog Input Modules series. As an I/O slice that mounts directly on the K-bus, the module introduces an RS422/RS485 differential link into a fieldbus coupler, letting PLCs capture or send serial data without external gateways. By occupying only 12 mm of DIN-rail space, it streamlines the connection of sensors, drives, or operator panels that rely on asynchronous serial transmission inside industrial automation cells.
At the physical layer the module offers a RS422/RS485 interface that works with a differential signal type and supports the standard transmit (TxD) and receive (RxD) channels. Its default data rate is 9600 baud, and line matching is provided by an internal impedance of 120 Ω to limit reflections on long cables. A receive FIFO of 128 bytes and a transmit FIFO of 16 bytes buffer bursts so the host controller can service communication asynchronously. Control and status occupy a 1 × 8-bit slot on the process image, while user payload is mapped to 3 × 8-bit words for deterministic access. The terminal draws 65 mA from the back-plane power supply and carries a protection rating of IP20, making it suitable for installation in enclosed control cabinets.
Mechanical integration is simple because the housing is only 68 mm deep, 12 mm wide, and 100 mm high, so the buffers, control bytes, and impedance features outlined above do not enlarge the rail footprint. Passive powering through the K-bus removes the need for separate supply wiring, and the impedance-matched differential pair aligns with the cabling requirements referenced earlier. Combined, the compact geometry, mapped byte widths, and onboard buffering let the terminal relay full-duplex serial traffic over the backplane while preserving the update cycle expected by adjacent analog and digital slices.
