Product Description:
The KL5151-0021 is an incremental encoder interface produced by Beckhoff. Installed on a standard terminal string, it translates differential encoder signals into count, latch, and comparator data that a controller can read through the K-bus backplane. Within an automation cell, the module captures rotary or linear position feedback, allowing precise speed or length regulation in packaging, printing, or material-handling stations. It is intended for applications that need accurate pulse counting and a fast response to changing motion states.
This module supports one sensor input and performs position detection with a 4-fold evaluation quadrature decoder. Counts are accumulated inside a 1 × 32 bit binary register, and a 32-bit zero-pulse latch can freeze the value at a reference mark. The input accepts signal frequencies up to 100 kHz, so high-resolution encoders can be used without missing edges. The encoder power pin supplies 24 VDC, removing the need for an external supply rail. A single comparator output can generate speed-dependent or position-dependent switch signals; its propagation delay is only 40 µs, and the electrical edge reaches full level within 10 µs. This supports responsive actuation for connected drives, valves, or other control devices.
The terminal draws its electronics power exclusively from the K-bus and exchanges process data over a width of 4 × 16 bit user data, 1 × 8 bit control/status. The housing clips onto a 35 mm DIN rail, and the installation position is variable so orientation does not affect operation. Protection class IP20 indicates that the enclosure is finger-safe but intended for cabinet installation. Field wiring remains separate from backplane communication. The narrow terminal format also helps when the module must be mounted near the connected axis or in cabinets with limited space.
