The KL5121 incremental encoder interface is supplied by Beckhoff within the KL Analog Input Modules series. The terminal functions as a single-channel position counter that acquires quadrature signals from field encoders and drives auxiliary transistor outputs, integrating both tasks on one bus node. In machine tools, packaging lines, or material-handling stations, it forwards precise count values and output states to the controller, enabling tightly coupled positioning, gating, or flow-metering sequences without dedicated separate hardware.
It supports 1 encoder and 4 outputs, letting one incremental feedback device be evaluated while four sourcing channels actuate valves, indicators, or enable lines. Pulse events are accumulated in a 16-bit binary counter, and the hardware accepts edge rates up to 1 million increments/s, thanks to four-fold evaluation of the A and B tracks. Installation is direct on a 35 mm DIN rail, and the slim housing measures 24 × 100 × 68 mm to conserve cabinet width. The interface recognizes HTL-level A, B, Latch, and Gate connections and provides a 24 V DC encoder supply while driving the outputs from the same 24 V rail. Two 16-bit data words plus two 8-bit control or status bytes are mapped into the process image, so the PLC receives counts and can set or read each output deterministically.
The signal path conforms to 24 V DC HTL logic, and each output can source up to 0.5 A, allowing direct actuation of small relays or pneumatic solenoids. State changes propagate in < 100 µs, which keeps gating pulses aligned with the high-speed counter. The screwless power contact passes 10 A to adjacent terminals, avoiding separate feed modules, and the enclosure is molded from polycarbonate for electrical insulation. With an IP20 rating, the module is intended for protected control cabinets where exposure to dust or moisture is minimal.
