Product Description:
The KL5111-0015 is a single-channel incremental encoder interface produced by Beckhoff within the KL Analog Input Modules series. Installed on a Bus Terminal rail, the device counts encoder pulses and sends position or speed information to the control system. By combining high-speed counting and latching functions in an IP20 housing, it supports centralized or distributed motion tasks in packaging lines, conveying equipment, and other automation cells. No additional signal conditioning is needed because the terminal supplies encoder power and conditions the differential signals internally.
The module accepts encoder streams up to 1 MHz, which is the fastest pulse sequence the hardware can register without loss. A 16-bit binary counter records each edge, providing 65,536 discrete positions before rollover. Internally, the module updates results every 400 µs, so the controller receives new position data within that interval. In interval mode, each digit corresponds to 200 ns/digit, allowing fine period measurement for speed calculation. For frequency evaluation, the hardware has an upper limit of 250 kHz, and pulses above that level are ignored to maintain deterministic timing. A four-fold quadrature decoder interprets the A, B, and C tracks so that both direction and zero reference are captured while count performance remains consistent.
Measurement cycles can be set as short as 1 ms or as long as 1000 ms, letting the PLC trade faster updates for smoother averaging. Each cycle is transferred to the bus as a 2×16-bit data + 2×8-bit ctrl/status structure, so position, interval, and state bits arrive in one consistent telegram. The module timestamps events with a granularity of 100 µs/digit to align captured edges with wider system clocks. Read, Set, and Activate commands manage counter resets and latching functions during operation.
