Product Description:
The KL5101-0000 is a single-channel incremental counter terminal manufactured by Beckhoff for the KL Analog Input Modules series. Mounted inside a modular I/O station, the unit converts encoder pulses into digital words that the PLC can use for position, speed, or length measurement. With its dedicated process image and latch functions, the module allows real-time evaluation of motion sequences, making it suitable for conveyor synchronization, spindle monitoring, and other high-speed automation duties. Because pulse counting and capture are handled in the terminal, the controller receives prepared data for fast response in cyclic tasks.
Its counter operates in a 16-bit up/down mode that uses a 16-bit binary structure, so counts can increase or decrease according to the quadrature phase relationship. The internal decoder supports 1x/2x/4x evaluation, and with a cutoff frequency of 1 MHz it can track fast encoders without missing edges. Time-based measurement benefits from a period resolution of 200 ns, enabling fine speed calculation. The terminal exchanges results over the K-bus through a process image of 2 x 16-bit data, 1 x 8-bit control/status while drawing only 25 mA from the backplane. External gate and latch lines accept 24 V control levels, and the zero-pulse latch stores a 16-bit snapshot for repeatable homing routines. Power for the logic is drawn from the station backplane, keeping user wiring limited to the signal inputs.
The terminal delivers a stabilized sensor supply of 5 V DC that can source up to 0.5 A, removing the need for an external encoder power rail. Status inputs share the same 5 V reference to help maintain clean edge detection. System power is provided by a 24 V DC field supply, matching common control cabinet practice. Environmental protection is rated at IP20, making the module suitable for mounting in enclosures where accidental contact and dust are controlled. External gate, latch, and zero-pulse functions support repeatable event capture during positioning and speed-monitoring tasks.
