Product Description:

The KL5101 Bus Terminal is a single channel encoder interface designed for incremental encoders. It supports both differential RS422 and TTL signal types. The terminal operates with a 5 V DC encoder supply and integrates into automation systems using a standard K bus connection. It is built to handle high speed encoder signals and is optimized for precise position and timing evaluations.

This Beckhoff KL5101 bus terminal features a 16 bit binary counter with integrated quadrature decoding. It supports 1x, 2x and 4x evaluation modes that enables up to 4 million increments per second with 4 fold evaluation. The KL5101 terminal includes: a 16 bit latch and a second input G2 acts as a gate to disable the counter that halts counting when high. The terminal accepts encoder connections via A, B, C channels and their inverse inputs (A, A inv; B, B inv; C, C inv) using differential RS422. It includes a 5 V DC status input and a 24 V DC gate/latch input. Period duration measurement is possible with 200 ns resolution for precise timing applications. Encoder output current can reach up to 0.5 A. The KL series bus terminal does not require power contact current and relies solely on K bus consumption which typically draws 60 mA. Commands supported by the terminal include read, set and enable for flexible control integration.

The KL5101 bus terminal weighs approximately 85 grams and supports variable installation positions. The device meets the IP20 protection rating that ensures safe operation in enclosed control cabinets. The KL5101 bit width in the process image is split into one 16 bit data input and one 8 bit control/status input.

Frequently Asked Questions about KL5101:

Q: What timing resolution does the KL5101 offer for period duration measurements?

A: The KL5101 provides period measurement with 200 nanosecond resolution. This ensures precise timing evaluations in demanding control applications.

Q: How does the KL5101 bus terminal handle high-speed encoder signals?

A: The KL5101 supports up to 4 million increments per second using 4x evaluation mode. It features a 16-bit binary counter with quadrature decoding for precise position tracking.

Q: Can the KL5101 interface with both differential and TTL encoder signals?

A: Yes, the Beckhoff KL5101 accepts differential RS422 and TTL signal types. This allows flexible connection options for various incremental encoders.

Q: What is the function of the G1 and G2 inputs on the KL5101?

A: The G1 input captures zero pulse or external signals via a 16-bit latch. The G2 input acts as a gate to disable the counter and halt counting when high.

Q: How does the KL5101 bus terminal manage power consumption during operation?

A: The KL5101 relies solely on the K bus for power, drawing typically 60 mA without power contact current. This makes it efficient for integration into automation systems.
