Product Description:
The KL5001-0018 is a Beckhoff encoder input terminal that belongs to the KL Analog Input Modules series. It acts as a single-axis SSI capture point, forwarding absolute position words from an external sensor to the system bus of a DIN-rail control cabinet. Within an automation line, the terminal converts the differential RS422 stream delivered on its D+, D-, Cl+, and Cl- pins into a memory-mapped value that the PLC can evaluate for motion verification, safety interlocks, or product tracking.
This terminal provides 1 logical channel, and its data direction is limited to read-only acquisition, so no clock or reset commands are issued back to the transducer. The dedicated SSI interface supports transmission frequencies up to 1 MHz, giving designers flexibility when long cable runs demand higher clock rates. Incoming serial telegrams are captured with a 24 bit width, then expanded to a 32-bit input inside the process image so that status flags and scaling bits can coexist with the raw position word. The electronics are protected by an enclosure rated at IP20, which is suitable for closed electrical cabinets without heavy dust or washdown exposure. Signal input and echo output both use differential RS422 drivers to minimize electromagnetic interference, and the spring-loaded contacts latch directly onto a 35 mm DIN rail for secure mounting.
Cabinet layout is simplified by the module’s compact footprint: it is only 12 mm wide and 100 mm tall, allowing high-density placement next to other Beckhoff I/O slices. Control voltage is fed through the bus coupler, and the terminal itself draws logic power from the common line at 24 V DC via integrated power contacts. Those contacts are rated to carry up to 10 A, enabling downstream supply daisy-chaining without separate terminal blocks. The specified power rail also energizes the internal line drivers, so no additional encoder power is sourced through this module.
