Product Description:
The KL5001-0016 is an SSI encoder interface module produced by Beckhoff for the KL Analog Input Modules series. Intended for compact DIN-rail I/O racks, the unit connects one external absolute encoder to a PLC and converts the differential RS422 signals into a format the controller can process. By capturing real-time position data, it supports closed-loop motion tasks such as linear positioning, rotary indexing, or synchronized drive coordination within automated machinery. It receives its operating power from the I/O supply section and shares power contacts with adjacent terminals so that high-speed measurement can be added without separate wiring.
This module supports 1 SSI channel. The serial input word is accepted with a width of 24 bits, and control and status data can be mapped as an optional 8-bit segment. Encoder values are transferred to the process image in a 32-bit format, giving the controller immediate access to position, error, and diagnostic flags. A default reading frequency of 250 kHz keeps cycle time short, yet the interface can be driven up to 1 MHz for fast absolute encoders. Both logic electronics and the encoder are supplied with 24 V DC, and the power contacts can conduct 10 A to maintain bus continuity across the terminal strip. The differential signals follow the RS422 electrical standard, and the dedicated D+, D-, Cl+, and Cl- terminals ensure noise-immune communication inside electrically demanding cabinets.
Electrical isolation of 500 V is provided between the field side and the backplane, protecting upstream controllers from ground shifts and transients. Installation is on a 35 mm DIN rail, and the slim housing carries an IP20 ingress rating suitable for protected enclosure interiors. Functional integrity is maintained in atmospheres up to 95% non-condensing relative humidity, so condensation-free moisture does not impair signal fidelity. The terminal relies on the 24 V DC supply rail already present in typical Beckhoff stacks, and its SSI protocol layer is presented through the RS422 signal interface. An internal logic block interprets clock and data lines, isolates status bits for the 8-bit control area, and passes the values into the 32-bit process image without additional user configuration.
