Product Description:
The KL5001-0001 is an SSI encoder input terminal produced by Beckhoff as part of the KL Analog Input Modules series. Installed alongside other Bus Terminals, it acquires absolute position data from one external sensor and passes the value to the controller for coordinated motion or length measurement tasks. This arrangement lets the control system read position feedback from a connected SSI device without requiring a separate external interface. Because the encoder interface is built into a Bus Terminal format, it can sit close to related I/O points and help keep cabinet layouts compact. The module occupies only 12 mm of panel width, with a height of 100 mm and a depth of 68 mm, and it clips directly onto a 35 mm DIN rail. Differential signals arrive on the D+, D-, Cl+, and Cl- screw connections located on the front face.
The terminal has a channel count of 1, and the synchronous serial data stream follows the RS422 standard to maintain noise immunity over long leads. In normal operation, the interface uses a clock frequency of 250 kHz; for high-speed axes, a jumper allows selection of a peak clock frequency of 1 MHz. Electrical separation between field wiring and the internal logic is provided by an isolation rating of 500 V, which helps protect upstream I/O nodes from encoder faults. The measured value is placed into a 32-bit process image entry, and the hardware accepts serial words up to 24 bits wide, which suits many absolute encoders that use the SSI protocol. The controller can process that value along with other terminal data in the same terminal row, which supports position-related control tasks.
The terminal draws field power through the backplane and uses 24 V DC on the two blue power contacts, while each contact set can carry up to 10 A. These conductors energize the optically isolated interface, so no extra wiring is needed for the logic side and terminal installation stays compact. The housing has an IP20 rating, which limits dust ingress and suits installation inside standard control cabinets. Front-access wiring and backplane power routing help keep signal and supply paths orderly inside the cabinet. Its narrow form also leaves surrounding terminal space accessible in dense I/O assemblies.
