The KL4001-0018 module from Beckhoff is a single-channel analog output terminal for Bus Coupler stations in industrial automation. By generating an isolated voltage or current signal, the terminal can drive actuators, control valves, or instruments directly from a distributed I/O rack. Its compact design lets it fit alongside other KL terminals on a shared power rail, which helps conserve cabinet space in modular control assemblies. It communicates through the K-bus backplane, which also supplies operating power for fast integration into terminal strings. That arrangement allows one terminal row to combine sensing, logic-related I/O, and analog actuation without extra interface modules.
Physically, the terminal occupies only 12 mm of horizontal space, projects 68 mm into the panel depth, and stands 100 mm tall, so dense channel groupings can be arranged without crowding the rail. The housing is molded from polycarbonate to provide electrical insulation and stable mechanical protection. Installation is done by snapping the module onto a 35 mm DIN rail, and the in-row bus connector mates automatically with adjacent terminals once the unit is seated. An ingress protection rating of IP20 helps prevent accidental fingertip contact with live parts, while the electronics are short-circuit proof and include surge suppression for switching transients.
From a signal standpoint, the module converts controller commands with 12-bit resolution, and the process image on the fieldbus side is organized in a 16-bit data word so scaling and status handling remain straightforward. Because the single output is potential-free, the controlled circuit floats relative to system ground, which is useful when separate power domains must remain isolated. Isolation at the output can also reduce unwanted ground interaction between the controller and the connected field device. During continuous operation, the electronics draw a typical 75 mA from the backplane, which simplifies current budgeting across longer terminal rows. This arrangement supports stable signal delivery without requiring separate operating-power leads at the terminal.
