Product Description:
The KL3312 is a thermocouple analog input terminal produced by Beckhoff for the KL Analog Input Modules series. This module converts low-level millivolt signals from temperature sensors into a digital representation that a PLC can process, enabling closed-loop thermal control in industrial automation systems. Its millivolt measurement capability also allows direct evaluation of calibration sources or nonstandard probes.
In operation, the terminal accepts thermocouple signals through a 2-wire interface and presents each value to the controller through a data frame with two 16-bit words and two optional 8-bit bytes on the K-bus. The 16-bit words contain the measured temperatures, while the optional bytes communicate limit status, sensor type, and error flags. The module has 2 independent inputs for monitoring separate temperature zones and provides a conversion granularity of 0.1 °C per digit. Power for the signal-conditioning electronics is supplied through the K-bus, eliminating the need for an external field supply and reducing wiring. Internal open-circuit recognition detects broken sensor leads and communicates the corresponding fault to the controller. Cold-junction compensation uses an onboard temperature sensor, allowing the terminal to account for temperature variations inside the control cabinet without requiring external compensation hardware.
For installation, the terminal snaps onto a 35 mm DIN rail that conforms to EN 60715. It carries an IP20 enclosure rating, so it is intended for installation inside a protected control cabinet rather than in an exposed field location. Temperature results use a 0.1 °C two's-complement format, allowing the PLC to process signed values without additional scaling. This format supports temperatures above and below zero while preserving the terminal's stated measurement granularity. A supervisory watchdog responds if bus communication is not detected within 100 ms, helping the control system respond predictably to a communication fault. The compact rail-mounted housing places both input channels close to the bus connection, reducing the amount of internal cabinet wiring required for multi-zone temperature monitoring.
