The KL3311-0100 analog terminal is produced by Beckhoff within the KL Analog Input Modules series. The unit accepts signals from a thermocouple and converts them into digital temperature data that can be processed by the controller through the system's K-bus. By providing a direct temperature acquisition point on the DIN rail, the module streamlines wiring and supports decentralized measurement tasks in automated machinery and process skids.
This terminal accommodates a single input channel, and its wiring follows a 2-wire scheme that minimizes field connectors while still enabling proper compensation. The default sensor supported is type K, which suits general-purpose applications up to roughly 1,372 °C. Cold-junction effects are mitigated through internal temperature measurement, allowing the module to correct readings without external sensors. The conversion logic uses microprocessor-based linearization, so the non-linear thermocouple curve is corrected before data is forwarded. Measurement granularity is set at 0.1 °C/digit, giving precise feedback for closed-loop temperature control. Broken sensor wires are detected automatically through open-circuit recognition, preventing the PLC from acting on invalid data.
The digitized value is placed on the K-bus with a data width of 1 x 16 bits, matching the process image size expected by standard Beckhoff controllers. For downstream logic, the process output appears in a 1/10 °C, two's complement format, simplifying signed arithmetic inside the PLC.
