Beckhoff manufactures the KL2541-1000 terminal within its KL Analog Input Modules series. The unit serves as a compact stepper-motor control interface that couples directly to the I/O bus, allowing position-based motion tasks to be executed from the same rack that handles standard signal acquisition. By integrating motor phase switching, encoder feedback, and digital command lines into a single 12 mm slice, it reduces wiring and enables precise axis coordination in packaging, assembly, and material-handling cells. This layout also keeps motion functions close to the distributed I/O, which helps maintain a compact control architecture.
Operational power is supplied at 24 V DC, which matches the common control voltage used on the Beckhoff terminal bus. Two independent status or limit switches can be wired to the module through 2 digital inputs, and motion acknowledgment is transmitted back to the controller over 1 digital output. For closed-loop step monitoring, the device accepts quadrature feedback on 4 encoder inputs, and each channel is debounced by an internal 0.2 ms input filter that suppresses contact chatter without adding noticeable latency. Position values are refreshed cyclically, and the Set Position Via Process Data control variant allows the PLC to overwrite the count register every bus cycle. Bit CW.14 is reserved as the dedicated position-select flag, giving programmers a fixed reference when constructing control words and coordinating motion commands with application logic.
The motion section can process encoder edges at up to 400,000 increments/s, so full-resolution tracking is maintained even during fast traverses. The phase driver can issue pulses at 125 kHz, and this ceiling sets the highest achievable step frequency for a 2-phase motor when microstepping is not used. Each phase winding may draw up to 5 A, which is suitable for midsize NEMA-23 actuators used for light-duty positioning or feed tasks. Because step frequency, current limit, and acceleration ramps are contained in the process image, the terminal can be controlled directly from the PLC without an external motion card.
